I’m a clown. Before you snicker and agree with me, let me explain. A few years ago, I felt God calling me to use clowning as a ministry. I had acted, and written skits and plays, plus I had the advantage of being a teacher. I love to make  people laugh, and I must admit I like being the center of attention, so it seemed like a natural fit. One of my favorite skits with children centers around Ephesians 2:10 “ For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.” (NLT)

I had a large mirror and a massive paintbrush. In my skit, I told the children that I was a famous painter, and was going to paint them a masterpiece. I explained that a masterpiece was the best of the best. There was nothing any better than a masterpiece. If you owned a masterpiece, you were rich indeed. Not many clowns can paint masterpiece, you know! By this time, the children were getting excited, as I had my crazed, passionate artist expression on. I would think, and paint. And think, and paint some more. I painted with such a flourish. Ah the beauty, the exquisiteness, the perfection! The suspense built until finally I finished – weary and exhausted. Oh I was so proud of my masterpiece! It was the best I had ever painted. There was no other masterpiece like this one! It was a one-of-a kind work of art!

Meanwhile, the children were clamoring to see this gorgeous piece of work. I wasn’t sure that I wanted to share it – it was just that perfect. After several minutes of back and forth banter, I chose one child to come up. As the child faced me, with the other children at her back, I slowly and dramatically turned around – the mirror. Imagine everyone’s surprise – and the comments –

“You didn’t paint anything!”

“That’s just a mirror!

“That’s her!”

“That’s me!”

But inevitability, someone would get to the real question, “How is that a masterpiece?”

Aha! That teachable moment! As children of the Almighty God, we need to learn to see ourselves as He sees us. God created us. Think about that – God Created Us!! He made each of us the way He wanted, and for His purpose. Psalm 139:13-16 says, “For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.” (ESV)

A masterpiece is by definition an artist’s or craftsman’s best piece of work. Now ponder the definition within the verse.“ For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things He planned for us long ago.” (NLT)

We are fearfully and wonderfully made, a masterpiece of God’s design. The next time you glance in a mirror and are tempted to mentally list your flaws, stop. Notice that masterpiece staring back at you. God made you – unique, rare, exclusive. You are the only one who can do the good things He planned for you. Go, and show the masterpiece God has created!
