Where do we start with a topic like this? We could start at the well… where Jesus asked the woman for a drink of water. I believe most Christians have a mindset that everyone on the planet knew Jesus when He was here in person. The Bible actually teaches quite the contrary of that particular thought. The woman at the well did not have a clue who she was talking to. She finally told Jesus what she thought to end the conversation… but it didn’t work… it backfired on her logic.
John 4:25-26 The woman said, “I know that Messiah” (called Christ) “is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us.”
Then Jesus declared, “I, the one speaking to you—I am he.”
John 5:8-15 There was also a man who lay at the pool for thirty eight years whom Jesus healed. The man didn’t have any idea who Jesus was when He approached him at a later time.
Jesus said to him, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.” At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked.
The day on which this took place was a Sabbath, and so the Jewish leaders said to the man who had been healed, “It is the Sabbath; the law forbids you to carry your mat.”
But he replied, “The man who made me well said to me, ‘Pick up your mat and walk.’ ”
So they asked him, “Who is this fellow who told you to pick it up and walk?”
The man who was healed had no idea who it was, for Jesus had slipped away into the crowd that was there.
Later Jesus found him at the temple and said to him, “See, you are well again. Stop sinning or something worse may happen to you.” The man went away and told the Jewish leaders that it was Jesus who had made him well.
How about all the soldiers that needed some kind of coaching so they would know who to arrest? Judas had to give them a sign… the kiss on the cheek… so they would know who Jesus was so they could arrest the right person.
Jesus told one man in the middle of the night that he must be born again and the Christian world thinks He told everybody.
As popular as Jesus was in the crowds, it may not have been an unusual event for Him to come across many people who had never seen Him before. So I would like to talk to you about a whole new concept… being an undercover Christian.
Many would say that we already have too many undercover Christians. But I am talking about sometimes being a secret agent for Christ. Nobody knows who you are… and then you win them to Christ. There is a proper time for the Jesus T-Shirts… especially when you are in the crowd at Marti Gras and people are raising all kinds of Cain. But in everyday life it seems to be real easy to sneak up on people if they have no clue you are about to witness to them.
Vicky and I were at an apartment complex one afternoon to pass out fliers for our church. All the kids loved my wife so I let her pass out most of the fliers’ inviting the children to Power Kids Super Church on Saturdays. Instead of going door to door at over two hundred apartments that day… we cheated a little and caught all the kids as they got off the bus. We call it wisdom.
Three different buses dropped off three different age groups within about an hour’s time. The first two buses had children from six to twelve years old that we were looking for… and they were all excited about Saturday morning. The last bus was all High School teenagers who were outside of the age group we were looking for. But one possible opportunity showed up.
A tall young man stepped off the bus and five or six other teens poured around him as he walked. He was obviously the leader. I walked behind them for a ways until he noticed me one too many times… and as he stopped… everybody stopped. I’m not sure why, but he told the others to keep on walking. Then the young man turned and addressed me, “You lookin’ for somebody.”
I said, “Yes sir, I’m looking for you. I’d like to talk to you for a minute if it’s possible.”
When you’re standing there in ordinary clothes… T-shirt and blue jeans with huge red and white tennis shoes on… they can’t imagine what might come out of your mouth next. They don’t have a clue that they are standing in front of a trained assassin that has the power to kill the old man. Did you know that killing the old man is the same thing as raising someone from the dead?
Then I looked at him with a serious look and with compassion and asked, “If you died graveyard dead right now… just fell on the ground dead… do you know whether you would go to heaven or not?”
He answered rather slowly as he thought about his answer. “I ya… I ya… no sir, I don’t believe I would. I believe I would go to hell.”
“Well, would you give me two minutes of your time to see if I can talk you out of going to hell?”
If they will ever give you two minutes, then they will listen and if they will listen… it is a rare thing for them to walk away without giving their life to Jesus.
He gave me those two minutes. That day he made Jesus Lord of his life… and already being a leader… he has the potential to change the world for Christ.
At another complex, a fourteen year old was a real crude and vulgar girl… and in charge of six or eight teenage girls. They were bad… real bad. It was the first time I had ever run across this teenage girl, but she was definitely the boss. I called her out in front of all her friends while I was taking a rest sitting on the steps which climb to the second floor of the apartment units.
“What do you want,” she blurted out rudely?
“I’d like to talk to you in private if it’s alright.”
“I don’t have to talk to you” she said with a real sassy voice.
“No, you don’t. And if you’re too scared to talk to me by yourself, then maybe we can try it some other time.”
She blew up. She turned around and cussed those other girls and told them to scatter… and you should have seen them go.
She almost started acting civilized and toned her voice down and asked me what I wanted to know. So I asked, “If you died graveyard dead right now… just fell on the ground dead… do you know whether you would go to heaven or not?”
There is no future in this particular question. That is why I sometimes ask the way I do. Their life has just ended and they are either going to heaven or they are going to hell.
“That’s a stupid question, I’m going to hell… what do you think?”
“I think if I were you I would change my mind. Have you ever been burned by a match?”
She didn’t answer me. She just stood there with her eyes looking at the ground.
“Will you allow me to talk to you for two minutes?”
“I’m listening, talk.”
Two minutes later she put her hand in mine and prayed. She said Amen three or four times before she opened her eyes and gave me a big hug. This was no longer the same person.
Is it possible that when we parade ourselves around in our church “stuff”… people that need our help steer clear of us. Jesus said that the people that walk in darkness will not come to the light. I believe Him.
John 3:19-20 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed. NIV
But if they have no idea that we are fisherman… until just the right moment prepared by the Holy Spirit… maybe we could catch more fish.
