Mr. Harris Almost Died

John 14:26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. NIV

My life is based on a true story…

Sunday morning Vicky and I went to church at Abundant Life Christian Center as we normally would. Afterwards we stopped by the Harris house in Texas City to check on Vicky’s parents and make sure everything was fine at their house. Mrs. Harris met us at the front door and when we got in the house… there seemed to be confusion in the house… in the atmosphere.

It didn’t really make any sense; but nothing was right in the house. Again, we couldn’t see anything wrong… but everything was wrong. Mrs. Harris was sitting at the kitchen table just doing whatever she was doing and acting like nothing was wrong.

Vicky asked her mom, “Where’s Dad?”

“He’s sleeping,” she answered.

“What is Dad still doing in bed at this time of the day?”

She answered, “He didn’t feel too good this morning so he slept in.”

As I was sitting down at the kitchen table, Vicky had a check in her spirit and she decided to go check on her father. All of a sudden I heard Vicky scream, “David I need help.”

These are not very comforting words. Everything went wrong on the inside of me all of a sudden… and I got up from the table quickly and went into bedroom where she was.

When I entered the room I could see that everything was wrong on Vicky’s face. I turned and looked at her father and he was sleeping soundly under many covers. A closer look revealed that Mr. Harris appeared almost dead and he looked like he was as stiff as a board.

I quickly threw the covers off of him and everything was soaking wet. Vicky said immediately, “I’m calling an ambulance.”

She walked out of the room quickly and I just said, “God… I need your help. Show me what to do.”

Then I lay my hands on Mr. Harris’ chest and started praying. He was soaking wet with sweat. Fear kept trying to come and I started praying in tongues first… and then in English.

“I bind the spirit of death off Mr. Harris and I plead the blood of Jesus over him. Let destruction be far removed from his body. I rebuke lockjaw and heart attacks in Jesus name.”

Right then… on the inside of me I heard… “Everything is going to be alright now.”

I took my hands off his chest and took another real good look at his face. I didn’t see anything that would even give a hint that he would be alright now.

Vicky came back in the room almost immediately with a bottle of water in her hand. Everything was happening so fast. I quickly told her that the Holy Spirit said everything was going to be all right now.

She looked at me with a long funny look… because nothing looked like it was going to be alright. We did everything we could to get some water in his mouth, but his mouth would not open. He almost looked like he was frozen, even though he was soaking wet from sweat. His teeth were clamped together.

Then Mrs. Harris hollered from the kitchen, “I hear the ambulance coming.”

I told Vicky’ “I’ll be right back. I’m going to go out in the middle of the street and flag down the ambulance so they will know where we are.”

They were still two blocks away. I couldn’t believe Mrs. Harris could hear the siren from that far away. I didn’t hear anything until I got out in the street. They spotted me waving my arms and came and parked the truck quickly in front of the home. Two of them hurried up to the house to assess what needed to be done.

Once in the house, they realized that there was so little room for the gurney because of all the furniture. They would have to carry Mr. Harris out in the wet sheets that he was already laying on. They could lay him on the gurney when they got him out of the house. We just stayed out-of-the-way the best we could and moved anything that we needed to move quickly. By then a third man came in.

They had to be a little rough with Mr. Harris… but it was the only way to get him out of the house. The plan was a success. They got him onto the gurney quickly. They took him out to the back of the ambulance and loaded him through the back doors. All three men disappeared in the back with him.

Vicky already knew she was going with the ambulance so she gathered what she needed and got into the ambulance on the passenger side. There was a lot of loud talking by the EMT’s in the back of that ambulance. It was taking longer than they needed to… shouldn’t they be on the road by now? Then the whole ambulance began to rock as if they might be doing CPR on Mr. Harris.

Vicky almost started crying when I looked at her and I said, “Vicky, the Holy Spirit said everything is alright.”

I said it kind of sternly because I’m wanted her to know that God had actually spoken to me about the situation. It wasn’t a time to doubt what God said.

She looked at me and said, “David… everything is going to be alright.” She spoke by faith in what she believed I heard.

When we make up stuff in our own heads… it will never work. But when God gives you a word personally… you have to stand on that word alone… no matter if they are doing CPR on your dad.

I smiled a little smile and I said gentler, “Yes, everything is going to be alright.”

Vicky seemed to relax a little bit in the short amount of time that we talked. Then the driver jumped in the front seat and they were all gone down the road. The siren came on halfway down the block and the thought came, “That’s not a good sign…” and I continued to say out loud… “Everything’s going to be alright.”

By that time my sister in law Linda had showed up and she started packing mom up to take her to the hospital in her car. They were going to follow the ambulance, but the ambulance left without them. Then they were gone too.

In the next few minutes… the tears began to roll down my face as I continued to say, “Everything’s going to be alright.”

I started to relax a little bit and make sure that we had everything we needed for the hospital stay and went ahead and got in the family car and drove out to the hospital.

The doctor did all kinds of test on Mr. Harris when they got him into the emergency room. Later that evening the physician concluded that Mr. Harris was actually in the process of having a massive heart attack. I don’t know how they understand that kind of stuff through tests but that’s what they told Vicky about the situation.

He said, “There’s no doubt about it, he was in the process of having a massive heart attack and all of a sudden it just quit. We don’t understand why it quit.”

Vicky told me about it later, and we understood clearly what had happened. God is bigger than the devil. Greater is He who is in us than he who is in the world. God showed me to lay hands on his chest and rebuke heart attacks. To God be all the glory.

I want to thank God for His precious Holy Spirit. I want to thank Him so much for showing me exactly what to say and what to do when it was necessary that I do something. That’s what the Holy Spirit and His unction is all about. Even in the Bible he is called our helper… our comforter. He is the One who knows all things, and He tells us what we need to know when we need to know it. And that’s the truth.
