THE LORD OF THE SABBATH…

Jesus-Sabbath-day

What was the reason of the Sabbath?

1). God resting from His works on the seventh day of creation…

” For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day…”
Ex 20:8-11

2). He delivered Israel out of the bondage of Egypt by His mighty hand..

“And remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the Lord your God brought you out from there by a mighty hand and by an outstretched arm; therefore the Lord your God commanded you to keep the sabbath day.” Deut 5:15

The Sabbath was a command given “specifically” to Israel NOT Gentiles..

There is no Biblical record whatsoever of anybody keeping the Sabbath prior to Exodus 16 and Nehemiah 9:13-16…

” But they and our fathers acted proudly, hardened their necks, and did not heed your commandments.” vs.16

Adam walked in the cool of the day with God and had perfect rest in Him-
But when he fell, he lost that “rest” {spiritual rest}, and so did all of mankind that was born of the flesh..

It was established for Israel as a sign between God and man, that they might know that the Lord was God who sanctifies them..

The Sabbath was the sign of the Old Covenant…

In the Old Testament, the Sabbath pointed to Jesus Christ..

Jesus Christ through His redemptive work “regained” the Sabbath Rest,{the Spirit of the living God} that Adam lost…

He came to complete a redemptive work by restoring the rest that was forfeited in the Garden…

“But the testimony which I have is greater than the testimony of John; for the works which the Father has given Me to accomplish– the very works that I do– testify about Me, that the Father has sent Me.”
JN 5:36

Jesus Christ began the work spoken of, in Genesis 3:15

” I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.” Gen 3:15

He completed the work on the cross ..

“This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.
“I glorified You on the earth, having accomplished the work which You have given Me to do.” JN 17:3-4

And the work was fully satisfied in God by the resurrection and ascension of Christ..

“concerning His Son, who was born of a descendant of David according to the flesh,
who was declared the Son of God with power by the resurrection from the dead, according to the Spirit of holiness, Jesus Christ our Lord,”
Rom 1:3-4

Which lead again to divine rest..

“Every priest stands daily ministering and offering time after time the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins;
but He, having offered one sacrifice for sins for all time, SAT DOWN AT THE RIGHT HAND OF GOD,” Heb 10:1-12

C/F Gen 2:1-3

1..”Thus the heavens and the earth were completed, and all their hosts. 2..By the seventh day God completed His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. 3..Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made.”

Because we are now under the New Covenant we are no longer under obligation to keep the Old Covenant, especially the sign of the Old Covenant which was the Sabbath…

“When He said, ‘A new covenant,’ He has made the first obsolete. But whatever is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to disappear” (Heb. 8:13).

In the New Testament there is nowhere that it commands Christians to observe the Sabbath…

In Acts it mentions the Sabbath nine times, and never once as a day of worship for Christians..

Even the Apostle Paul rebuked the Galatians for attempting to add the observance of days to the sufficiency of Christ’s work for salvation..

9..”But now that you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, how is it that you turn back again to the weak and worthless elemental things, to which you desire to be enslaved all over again?10..You observe days and months and seasons and years.
11..I fear for you, that perhaps I have labored over you in vain.”
Gal 4:9-11

Paul preached:

“Now to the one who works, his wage is not credited as a favor, but as what is due. But to the one who does not work, but believes in Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is credited as righteousness.” Rom 4:4-5

Since the finished work of the cross, the signs have become obsolete..

“When He said, “A new covenant,” He has made the first obsolete. But whatever is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to disappear.
Heb 8:13

“Therefore no one is to act as your judge in regard to food or drink or in respect to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath day–things which are a mere shadow of what is to come; but the substance belongs to Christ” Col. 2:16-17

God has completed His work of the new creation. And the Christians now, are the first fruits of that creation..

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” 2 Cor 5:17

Our rest, as it was enjoyed by Adam everyday, has again been restored. And because of His redemptive work, He has become our Sabbath rest.

Jesus said, “Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light” Mt. 11:28-30

Though the Christian is now “resting” in Jesus Christ’s finished work on the cross, our ultimate Sabbath will be perfected at our resurrection..

“For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet of God and the dead in Christ will rise first.” 1 Thess 4:16

“For the son of man is the Lord of the Sabbath.”
Matt 12:8

Jesus Christ’s DEATH, BURIAL AND RESURRECTION- is now our Sabbath Rest..

WE REST IN HIM ALONE NOT OBSERVANCES…
